It is in the wet zone rain forest, which gets two monsoons each year, and is one of the wettest places in the country. The Academy Award winning The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed on the Kelani River near Kitulgala, although nothing remains now except the concrete foundations for the bridge (and, supposedly, the submerged train cars that plunged into the river in the climactic scene). Kitulgala is also a base for white-water rafting, which starts a few kilometres upstream.

Transfer to your hotel and check in. Standard check in is 1400 hrs.

Enjoy a rafting expedition. Kitulgala is the main white water rafting location in Sri Lanka. The rafting expedition is often done in an inflatable raft on white water or different degrees of rough water, in order to thrill and excite the raft passengers.

Today you will visit the Belilena Caves. Belilena is a famous large cave in Sri Lanka. It is located 8 km from the town of Kitulgala. Deraniyagala, who found ten skeletons of these people. They lived 2,000 feet above sea level. It is believed they lived more than 32,000 years ago. A visit requires a rope or rope ladder for entry. The part of the cave beyond the lake that fills it a short way from its mouth still remains unexplored.

Sightseeing
Proceed on your trek inside the Singharaja rain forest. The hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests eco region, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. The reserve’s name translates as Lion Kingdom and is a treasure trove of endemic species, including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

In Singharaja, because of the dense vegetation, wildlife is not as easily seen as at dry-zone national parks such as Yala. There are about 3 elephants and the 15 or so leopards are rarely seen. The most common larger mammal is the endemic purple-faced langur. An interesting phenomenon is that birds tend to move in mixed feeding flocks, invariably led by the fearless greater racket-tailed drongo and the noisy orange-billed babbler. Of Sri Lanka’s 26 endemic birds, the 20 rainforest species all occur here, including the elusive red-faced malkoha, green-billed coucal and Sri Lanka blue magpie. Reptiles include the endemic green pit viper and hump-nosed vipers, and there are a large variety of amphibians, especially tree frogs. Invertebrates include the endemic common birdwing butterfly and the inevitable leeches.
