Bandarawela

If you are looking for a place to start your exploration of the hill country in Sri Lanka, then you have no better place to start this off than Bandarawela. Situated at the base of the hill country it provides the perfect stepping stone to begin your trek into the central hill stations of Sri Lanka. Found midway between Ella and Haputale which make up two points of the Health triangle this picturesque town with its idyllic weather conditions all year round is a popular holiday spot for both foreign visitors and Sri Lankans alike. One of the famous heritage sites you will find in Bandarawela is the Dowa Rock Temple founded by King Walagamba, which is found about 6km away from the central town. The cliff face of the temple boasts the incomplete carving of Buddha almost 4m high, while within the cave you will find inscriptions and murals from the 1st century BC. Deep within the cave you will also find the ”House of Cobra”. Just like all the other cities that make up the central highlands, Bandarawela as well is a prime market gardening and tea growing zone in Sri Lanka. As a center for tea growing and fruit harvest, you will find the town bustling with busy market goers picking up provisions as they go along. This city offers you plenty to tickle the adventurous bone in you, from lush hiking trails to towering waterfalls, with plenty of knowledgeable guides at your service. Bandarawela is also famously known for its meditation retreats which acts as a spot of attraction for people looking to spend a relaxing vacation.
