Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa, located 100km south of Colombo is one of the liveliest coastal towns of the southern province, well known as a popular tourist destination. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday by the beach and out in the sun, then Hikkaduwa is the place for you, because it’s got everything you could ask for. From five star accommodation in the form of sprawling beach side resorts with stunning views to wide beaches with its backdrop of shady palm groves, you will find this your perfect spot for some relaxation and sun bathing.

Hikkaduwa is the premier surf spot in the southern coast, especially in the season between November to April. During this season, many famed International surfing competitions are held here. Surfing at Hikkaduwa is especially good for beginners since the waves tend to be gentle as they break on the reef rather than on the beach itself. Hikkaduwa is considered a haven for scuba diving and snorkeling, especially if you head out further offshore you will be able to feast your eyes on some of the most beautiful coral reef and reef fish of all colors. Compared to having a look at these from glass bottomed boats, you should get a little adventurous and try your hand at snorkeling, and you will definitely be rewarded for it.

Although the Hikkaduwa Bay Beach acts the center of attraction in this town, as you head inland you will find that there are other sites of interest as well, such as the Alut Vihara, the monastery at Telwatta, which is a famed monastery, celebrated as a learning center since the 15th century. Amongst other inland attractions you have the Seenigama Temple, which is a quaint little white building on a tiny offshore island. You also have the Sri Gangarama Maha Vihara, which is a more modern Buddhist temple perched on top of a large terrace.
