Located on southern coastal belt Tangalle is approximately 295km south of Colombo. This small uncrowded beach resort is the ideal location if you are looking to spend a lazy and relaxed beach holiday, with some amazing views. But if you are looking to have a blast in the water with some adventurous water sports and other adrenaline rush activities then Tangalle is definitely not the place for it. You will better suited heading out towards the more popular bay beach resorts of Bentota or Unawatuna for this.

This little town has a very relaxed atmosphere to it, with is great expanse of sandy beaches where you will find people sunbathing and crashing out. The main town has a fishing harbor and busy market place as well as the famous Rest House which was built during the Dutch period in the year 1774. This town has many reminders of the Dutch era, especially with its buildings such as the Court House and the Dutch Fort. This little town with its old world charm because of its picturesque coves and palm fringed bay now encompasses some of the neighboring towns as well, and now consists of a series of bays, which includes 2 large bays Medaketiya and Medilla beyond the main town as well as Goyambokka and Pallikkudawa when you approach from the West.

One of the interesting sites to visit in Tangalle is the magnificent rock temple of Mulkirigala, which lies about 20km north of the town. You have to ascend a series of steps to enter the natural caves that lie there containing numerous Buddha statues and paintings.
